Director's Welcome

Terry

To some, birthdays are to be endured and quickly forgotten. As Warwick Sport approaches its sixth anniversary, we have, however, something to be proud of and to celebrate. With a membership in excess of 10,000, supporting over 70 sports clubs and a significant
programme of sports development, our next birthday should provide an opportunity for Warwick students and staff, past and present, to reflect on a short, but successful
history. The dedicated Warwick Sport staff, supported by officers of the Students’ Union, have worked enthusiastically to enhance the opportunities available at Warwick to pursue sport and physical activity. The aim has been to provide these opportunities to all, regardless of individual skill level or aspiration, yet endeavouring to create a climate that allows and encourages individuals to be the best they can and wish to be. ‘Sport For All’ has been our aim, but increasingly we are eager to support our talented athletes through a sports’ bursary and scholarship scheme and the identification of Focus Clubs’ that receive additional support and funding because of their sporting successes and ambition to compete at the highest levels in student sport. We are now into the final few months leading up to the UK hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These events will not only be the greatest showcase of sporting  talent seen in this country for generations to come, but also will provide the inspiration to millions to become involved in sport. We must harness this excitement to encourage more and more of the Warwick community to participate in sport and physical activity. Our outstanding stock of sports facilities continue to be maintained at an ever higher standard, with new facilities being added on a regular basis. In the current academic year we have invested in 4 new synthetic clay courts next to the Indoor Tennis Centre. Adjacent to the Lakeside Residences we have opened 3 new netball/ tennis macadam courts and an outdoor gym complex, contributing to a planned area for outdoor social activities.

The Warwick Sporting story continues to prosper. We hope, likewise, that our sporting family continues to grow and prosper.
