Welcome to the Warwick University Handball Club webpage. As the fastest growing sports club on campus, Warwick Handball is always looking to welcome new members - whether you are male or female, have 20 years of experience or are a complete novice interested in trying a new sport, we would be very happy to welcome you to any of our training sessions.
Following its establishment in 2007, the Club has seen huge success and fantastic growth. Since 2010, the Club has gone from struggling to field one men's team, to sporting three men's teams and a women's team, with a burgeoning development section as well!
If you don’t know much about the sport of handball, you’re not alone! While very popular in continental Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, handball is not so popular in the United Kingdom. While development efforts in recent years have led to a great increase in British participation levels, it is still less well known than we would hope.
In a way, the sport is a kind of cross between football and basketball.
Basically, it’s a game played by two teams of seven, whose object is to score goals by throwing a ball the size of a small football past a goalkeeper into a goal three metres wide and two metres high. In that sense it is similar to football, with the small exception that the ball is passed around by players using their hands rather than feet - any contact with the ball below the knee is a foul. Please see our new website for an excellent description: http://www.warwickhandball.co.uk/about-handball.html
Socials are where the real fun happens! We host weekly socials open to all club members - providing a great opportunity to meet other players, make some new friends, and have a drink or two! We hold socials at Circling and Pop! (Wednesdays), trips into Leamington and Coventry, and the occasional curry - it's all good fun, so come along!

Games
We currently run three men's teams and one women's team, with the Men's 1st Team and Women's teams both playing in the second tier of national competition: the EHA Midlands Regional League and the EHA South League 1 respectively. To find out more click here for the Men's League and here for the Women's League. We also run two further men's teams, with the aims of increasing participation and developing players to one day compete with the Men's 1st Team.
Warwick Handball not only offer development opportunities for 1st team members; we currently run non-team training sessions and successfully ran a Beginners' Course in association with Warwick Active for around 60 members for ten weeks in the Autumn Term. The Beginners' Course was a first for the Club, and was a massive triumph: of the 16 players we took to the University Championships, 11 of them had come through the Beginners' Course, making our 14th place from 40 teams particularly impressive. We also have regular fixtures and tournaments for the Development Teams; we sent three men's teams and a women's team to a Development Tournament early in Term 1, with one of our men's teams coming second.
We enter a Men's and a Women's team at the ABUHC national championships in February which take place in London. In 2013, our men's team finished 14th out of 40. An incredible achievement considering that 11 of the 16 players had started the year as complete beginners. By comparison, the far more experienced Coventry University team finished 33rd. Our Women's team won all their games on the 2nd day and finished in a very respectable place.
2013 also saw the first Handball Varsity game. The result was not what we wanted but Varisty will be an exciting date in the Warwick Handball Calendar for years to come !
