TRAINIG UPDATE: Training is back on in the new studio, top floor of sports centre.
Karate is a form of self defence, literally meaning "empty hand". Qualified instructors possessing 2nd, 3rd and 4th DAN black belts carry out instruction during the sessions, which cover a whole range of Kumite (sparring), Kata (technical form) and self-defence. This martial art is especially for you if you wish to build on your mental and physical fitness, and increase your self confidence and awareness. There are three training sessions per week and one grading per term where the members are examined on a series of kicks, punches and blocks of varing levels of difficulty and when successful are awarded new belts.
The club caters for all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced grades. All are welcome to come along to a training session and join in, with the first session being free of charge.
The Warwick University Shotokan Karate Club has achieved an outstanding ongoing record of success, winning various medals and trophies at every tournament entered since its foundation in 1984. It was elected the "Sports Club of the Year" in 92/93 and 93/94 and its success has continued to grow, being honoured with the "Cecil Angell Trophy" in 2002 for achievements and commitment to furthering the university's reputation for sports. The club has produced many regional, national and two world champions. Our most recent world champion, Zoe Campbell, was also elected "Sports Woman of the Year" on three occassions during her time at the university. We are very fortunate to have Zoe still attached to our club as one of the instructors. Her dedication serves to motivate us all.
In addition the club actively promotes an enjoyable and varied social scene. Socials after training are encouraged enabling everyone to get to know each other, so that they can really enjoy the time they spend at the club. We are also starting 'circling' for 2012. This will take place on selected wednesday nights at the student's union prior to POP!
