The Yoga Club offers five different classes, each with a unique emphasis:
-
Vinyasa
-
Hatha Yoga
-
Dynamic Vinyasa Yoga
-
Meditation
-
Freestyle Ashtanga Yoga
We offer physically challenging yoga classes as well as more relaxed classes which focus on breathing, and also meditation sessions. Scroll down and and read through the decription of each class to find out which one is for you!
We aim to provide each member of Warwick Yoga with the opportunity to explore whichever aspect of yoga it is that appeals to them, and if you think something is missing or there is a style of yoga not offer that you would like to try, please do let us know! We are always looking to improve and expand the society and want every member to feel that there is something for them.
Hatha Yoga
· Where: Westwood Dance Studio
· When: Tuesdays 16.30 - 18.00
· Cost: £3.00 (£3.50 - non-members)
These Hatha Yoga classes are perfect for people who want a relaxing, non-intensive workout. The teacher, Mo, is a British Wheel Of Yoga teacher. There is a focus on all aspects of yoga - posture, breath, relaxation and meditation, thus producing a calming, strengthening affect.
This form of yoga concentrates on holding the asanas (postures) for an extended period of time. At the beginning and end of every Hatha session there is a short relaxation period aimed at steadying the mind and bringing it into focus.
The head of class, Ruth for 2012-2013, will collect the money at each class. If you have any questions about the class please feel free to contact her.
Vinyasa Yoga
· Where: Westwood Dance studio
· When: Mondays 15.30 - 17.00
· Cost: £3.00 (£3.50 - non-members)
This type of yoga is mid-way between Hatha and Ashtanga in intensity and is taught by Hayley Merchant. Hayley has been attending Mark Freeth's Freestyle Ashtanga classes for six years, and after becoming inspired by his teaching and practice she undertook his teacher training course to become a qualified instructor herself.
Influenced heavily by the innovative nature of Mark's classes, Hayley aims to keep her classes lively, playful, and engaging, exploring both the challenging physical aspects of the practice and the calming benefits of certain sequences and postures. The classes are also designed to appeal to students from different sporting backgrounds - or those with none at all - to ensure that everyone can benefit from the positive physical and mental effects of yoga in their sporting and/or personal life.
University can be a stressful time, and with this in mind these classes are aimed to improve mental focus and general well-being, as well as developing flexibility and strength to counteract the effects of sitting for hours at a computer desk (or in the pub!).
The head of class, Alicia for 2012-2013, will collect the money at the end of each class. If you have any questions about the class, please feel free to contact her.

Dynamic Vinyasa Yoga
· Where: Westwood Dance Studio (on Westwood campus)
· When: Wednesdays 4:30-6pm,
· Cost: £3.00 (£3.50 - non-members)
This class, also taught by Hayley, has a similar feel to the Monday Vinyasa class but is slightly more ramped up. Designed to invigorate and energise, it is the perfect way to counteract that midweek slump and get a good morning workout!
Taught in the superb dance studio on Westwood campus, it is also a great opportunity to practice yoga in front of a mirror and work on that alignment…
Suitable for all abilities, from complete beginner to the more experienced yogi, the emphasis here is on having fun and exploring a more dynamic practice that will challenge and revitalise both body and mind.
The head of class, Alicia for 2012-2013, will collect the money at the end of each class. If you have any questions about the class, please feel free to contact her.

Freestyle Ashtanga Yoga
· Where: Westwood Dance Studio
· When: Fridays 15.30 - 17.00
· Cost: £4.00 (£4.50 - non-members)
Mark Freeth, founder of ‘The Freestyle Yoga Project’, runs a dynamic, playful, and inspiring class with an emphasis on different postures each week. Rather than sticking to set sequences or a particular style of yoga, Mark draws influences from various teachers, movements, and projects (such as the Kula Yoga Project in New York) and presents his own form of ‘Freestyle Vinyasa Yoga’ which works outside of the box. The project is constantly evolving. Mark attends workshops, teaches internationally, and learns from other influential practitioners, giving us the opportunity to take part in something truly dynamic and exciting in the yoga community.
You can be sure that when attending a Freestyle Ashtanga class there will be something for everyone, from the complete beginner to the more experienced yogi. There is no need to worry about not being able to keep up with the pace of the class – for almost every pose modifications are offered to build you up to the more advanced posture as your practice progresses (which will be in no time!). Though some of the poses demonstrated are difficult, this is embraced and there is never any need to feel put off or intimidated. Mark always ensures that the environment is one of fun and learning (and sometimes sitting on your mat watching others fall out of postures is entertainment enough in itself!).
Mark’s dynamic form of yoga is beneficial whatever your other activities are. Whether it be football, dancing, tennis, climbing (yoga is great for achieving that elusive balance between agility and strength) or any other sport, yoga will help you up your game. Perhaps you have shied away from competitive sports but still want to get fit with others, in which case yoga is also for you! In addition to improving muscle tone, flexibility and strength, a dynamic yoga practice is proven to be great way to relieve stress and lift your mood, which is always handy when snowed under with essay deadlines and housemates who leave you with the washing up...
