This summer the University of Warwick Women’s Netball Club will be testing their determination, grit and willpower all in the name of charity. On the 30th July 2012 twenty-nine girls will be pushing off from outside London’s Crystal Palace Velodrome. Beginning their three-day challenge to make it to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The ride will see the girls tackle the hilly terrain of the south of England and onto Newhaven Port where they will catch the ferry across to Dieppe, where they will have their first well deserved night’s sleep. After a questionable night’s sleep in a little French tent, the girls will depart for their second day of strenuous pedalling. That night will leave them 70 miles away from their target destination in the centre of Paris. The final push will take them along the rolling French countryside and into the bustling capital city where they will proudly ride down the Champs-Élysées to the Eiffel Tower.
The twenty-nine girls participating come from regions all over the county but join at Warwick University to play for one of the University’s seven women’s netball teams. The standard varies from girls in our 1st team who compete in the BUCs Midlands conference (division 2a) to girls who simply want to play netball recreationally.
The challenge is in aid of raising a substantial sum of £24,000 which will be equally donated to three worthy charities: Breast Cancer Campaign, Hope for Children and Practical Action. The club have worked tirelessly to fundraise over the past seven months. The girls have been giving up their weekends to bag pack in local supermarkets, walking around campus selling Krispy Kremes and helping the local community marshal big events such as the Kenilworth Firework display. As well as asking their friends and family to generously donate on their virgin money giving pages.
In preparation for the cycle the girls have been testing their strong thighs by taking part in spin classes and strength and conditioning weight sessions, on top of their weekly BUCS matches.
