All sports clubs and activities have risks, some more than others. Warwick Sport takes seriously its responsibility in ensuring safe participation of members in ALL sports and activities. Equally, every member must also be responsible for their own actions and to others who may be under their care or guidance. Club Officers should always be the first port of call for any questions or doubts a member may have on safety.
CLUB CONSTITUION & GOOD PRACTICE
All clubs must have a constitution and a code of conduct, produced with guidance from the relevant National Governing Body. A copy of these can be found on the clubs webpage.
AFFILIATION
In its commitment to safer sport, all Clubs (where possible) should affiliate to their respective National Governing Body. Being affiliated to the NGB in some cases may provide third party insurance cover.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assessment is a formal way of evaluating possible dangers within a particular sport or activity. Some sports may have many. Each Club reassesses its risks at the beginning of each academic year and compiles a new risk assessment form. This is available on the clubs webpage.
INSURANCE
Once you have joined Warwick Sport, you automatically receive personal accident insurance cover, which means that whilst you are involved in a Warwick Sport event, including travel to and from it, you have a certain level of personal insurance cover. For further info contact the Sports Development Co-ordinator.
COACHING
All coaches, whether paid or unpaid, must agree to the Coaches Code of Ethics in the corresponding coaching pack. Club Officers are expected to ensure that any coach they appoint has valid qualifications and is insured for professional indemnity.
FIRST AID COVER
Sports Clubs are no longer required to send members of their exec on Impact First Aid Courses. All Sports Facilities in which the Sports Clubs train will always have First Aid Qualified members of staff working should there be any accidents. For all BUCS matches and Intramural Leagues first aid will be provided by Warwick Sport. When playing matches at other Institutions they will also provide first aid. Should any club have a problem with First Aid at other Institutions please let the Warwick Sport Staff know. Warwick Sport throughout the year will provide First Aid training for those Clubs that we consider to be high risk. During the year Warwick Sport will organise Water Based First Aid Courses, Outdoor Activity First Aid Courses and High Risk Duty of Care Seminars. It is expected that at least two members of the Exec of each of the High Risk and Water Based Clubs attend these courses with the options for more than two to attend in certain courses.
First Aid Kits
First Aid kits are available to borrow from the Warwick Sport Office for trip based clubs that go off campus to take part in their Club activities. These are specialist Mountain Leader First Aid Kits and are only to be borrowed by those high risk and water based sports clubs, when leaving campus. A deposit of £20 is required required to borrow these First Aid Kits. Should you use anything from the First Aid Kits it will be the Clubs responsibility to restock the kit before it is returned to the Warwick Sport Office. Ice packs are also available from the Warwick Sport Office for those Clubs that wish to take an Ice Pack on Trips or for BUCS or League matches.
Training Courses
The Student Union run various Impact Training Courses. Funding is also available to subsidise individuals to attend external training courses connected with their sport.
EQUIPMENT
An officer from each club is nominated as being responsible for safety within the club, including that equipment is regularly checked.
ACCIDENTS AND INCIDENT REPORTING
You can rest assured that any accident or incident, no matter how small, will be taken very seriously and fully investigated. Notification of any accident is required with 24hours of the event. This is to ensure tht appropriate action as taken ASAP to ensure future safety. By reporting accidents we can all take a responsble attitude towards safety and hopefully reduce the chance of incidents occuring in the future.
